We a Leading VAT Refund Service for UAE Businesses

Businesses usually don’t struggle with VAT refunds because they’re ineligible. They do so because claims are submitted without a proper review of invoices and payments.

A VAT refund is not automatic — it depends heavily on how well the claim is prepared and supported.

We help businesses prepare, submit, and support VAT refund claims the right way.

Understanding VAT Refunds for Businesses in Dubai

A VAT refund is when a UAE business claims back excess VAT paid to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA).

This usually happens when:

  • The VAT you paid on purchases is more than the VAT you collected on sales

In such cases, the extra VAT paid can be claimed back as a refund from the FTA, instead of being carried forward.

Simple Example

If your business:

  • Paid AED 20,000 as VAT on expenses, and

  • Collected AED 15,000 as VAT on sales

The extra AED 5,000 can be claimed as a VAT refund from the FTA.

The following documents are required for a refund request:

  1. VAT refund application form (Microsoft Excel format)
  2. The 5 highest tax invoices from standard-rated expenses (in terms of value)
  3. The 5 highest official and commercial documents related to zero-rated supplies (in terms of value)
  4. The 5 highest tax invoices related to sales and other outputs (in terms of value)
  5. IBAN validation letter

The FTA may ask for further information and supporting documentation depending on their review of the details presented to them.

To submit a refund claim, you need to follow the below steps:

  1. Log in to the FTA’s e-Services portal.
  2. Go to the VAT tab, then the VAT Refunds tab, and access the form by clicking “VAT refund request.”
  3. Complete the form. Some fields are pre-populated using the details from your account. Ensure that all entered details are correct, then submit the form by clicking “Submit” along with the relevant supporting documents.
  1. Account creation on the FTA portal
  2. Completion of business and contact details
  3. Submission of required documents
  4. Declaration of VAT registration threshold
  5. FTA review and approval process

Frequently Asked Questions

As a VAT-registered business owner, you can request a refund either when filing the VAT return or after submitting the VAT returns.

No, there is no time limit specified by the authority for making a refund request. VAT registrants can apply for a refund at any time as long as there is a credit owed to them.

When a taxable person claims a refund of excess refundable tax, the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) will review the claim within 20 business days and notify the taxable person of its decision to accept or reject the refund.

The FTA may inform the applicant if it needs more than 20 business days to consider the application. Once the VAT refund claim is approved, the amount will be refunded within 5 business days.

Yes, the FTA can reject a VAT refund request if they are not satisfied with the correctness of the refund claim. This can happen due to several reasons including:

– No response to additional requirements (if any) within 5 working days.

– Incorrect attachments.

– Unmatched summary with the related VAT returns filed by the applicant.

Yes, this letter must be issued and stamped by the applicant’s bank and include details about the account holder’s name (which must match the taxable person’s name as registered with the FTA), the bank’s name, the bank’s address, the SWIFT/BIC, and the IBAN. The letter/certificate must be uploaded as an attachment to the refund application.
